Memorial Window
Artist : Unfortunately the artist who designed this window is unknown.
Technical Detail
This is a single light window located downstairs in the south wall of the Church. This window creates a kind of optical illusion. The tiebacks on the curtains and the latticework are designed to give the effect that you are looking inside the house and outside at the same time. At the people’s feet you will see they are outside, but looking up behind them, it seems you are looking out of the window into the garden. On either side of the woman’s head and above the robin there is lattice work painted on the glass to simulate a leaded glass window which opens to the garden with a flower basket in front of the window. The window is all mouth-blown glasses, painted and shaded in black. Again lead lines are used to create the design.
Subject Detail
This window shows a woman of noble character sewing and two children beside her. Over the window is inscribed. “She sought wool and flax and worked diligently with her hands.” The reference to this in the Bible is found in the book of Proverbs – Ch.31 v.13. At the bottom of the window you will see great detail in the form of flowers, mushrooms, grass etc. all contained in small pieces of mouth-blown glass. This window is cleverly designed to captivate people’s attention and probably to encourage children to look at it and point out what they see in the window. Other details seen in the window are a woman sewing, a variety of sewing materials, a girl holding a basket (maybe containing a picnic for them) and a ball of wool lying on the grass. Then, near the top of the window is the robin with its red breast always a favourite with children.
The inscription on the window is as follows:
“To Glorify God, to add to the beauty and enjoyment of his house. This window given in memory of A Loving Mother 24 Sept. 1932”
Mrs Matthew Mitchell donated this window in memory of her mother in 1932.
